we stayed in this huge chalet in a sub-resort called plagne soleil. we had slightly less than the whole building to run around in… in fact, our flat occupied about 0.5% of the total floorplan of the chalet. we were on the first floor, just above the “restaurant le baryon” sign. the pillars separate the flats, so our neighbours were above the bits of the sign that just say “le baryon”. being on the first floor is very handy when you've had a day snowboarding! there was space below ground to store our snowboards, so we didn't have to drag them upstairs. speaking of le baryon, the prices were sky-high there so we never ate there. our favourite place was… … le cap nord (the north pole) , which was diagonally across the square from our flat. they sold buckwheat crêpes, including an amazing italienne with olive tapenade. they were very friendly and debbie, who is allergic to buckwheat, was able to order sweet crêpes, made with normal flour, with the savoury fillings. this is the view from our balcony in the flat. you can see le cap nord's terrace on the left, and the beginning of a even huger chalet on the right. in the gap, there's a bit of a blue-graded slope, a car park and chalets belonging to the nearby plagne villages in the distance. here is the view from a nearby summit, la grande rochette! i was lucky enough to get up here on a beautiful sunny day. i thought there weren't any clouds, but i was able to take a snap at one hiding in the valley. here's the view in another direction. simply spectacular. after taking these snaps, i snowboarded down to plagne soleil. it was very steep in places, but i survived. let's not talk about it again. this is the same peak, but on a different day. i grabbed debbie and myles and we went up there on foot. the cloud ruined the view for them, and i could only show them photos of how amazing it looked in the sun. mysteriously, i showed them the steep descents, but the resort management somehow moved thousands of tonnes of snow to make the slopes a lot flatter. i marvel at their efficiency, but it did make me appear not quite as brave as i wanted to. here's me and myles. i should point out that with 2500 m less atmosphere than in cambridge, eye protection is still essential even when it's cloudy. even if it does make you look slightly silly. back to our flat, and debbie heard the sound of a piste basher while i was led down, recovering from half an hour's snowboarding earlier in the day. these machines and their fearless drivers spend all night smoothing the top layer of snow on every piste to give a better surface for the skiers and snowboarders. after they leave, the surface isn't totally smooth, but covered with small ridges, almost as though a giant comb has been drawn through the snow. here's a closer view of a piste basher. they really do look like johnny five 's bigger, scarier cousins. here's me and myles on the last day. the three of us were fed up of snowboarding and decided to follow the dou du praz walking trail. we were treated to some spectacular sights, such as this cloud colliding with a mountain. the walk was really good at letting us appreciate how the complex network of slopes on the piste map was much simpler in reality. here, right across the valley, we spot a school of skiers negotiating the bottom of a run near plagne centre. we were also treated to a great view of plagne soleil. here, the tree in the foreground is practically pointing at the chalet our flat was in. again, in the distance, we can see the zig-zag formation of the chalets in plagne villages. here's another sub-resort, called plagne aime 2000. the top building looks fantastic when it's all lit up at night, like a series of sparkling golden pyramids. by day, it looks like a huge concrete waffle. i never got close enough to tell (which may have been a good thing). we carry on climbing up, to reach the plateau of dou du praz… … and get treated to the sight of a sled being pulled by huskies. the building is the restaurant at dou du praz, which serves an excellent omelette and salad. a lovely treat to our walking expedition. here's one of the huskies up close, all tuckered out from the sled run. here's debbie with the sign at the top of our walk. note the lack of ski jacket — it gets very warm when you're walking in the sun! in the afternoon, miles and i tried out the toboggan run, along with cormac, steph and keith. here's cormac at the end of one of the runs, trying hard to enjoy himself. and here's myles. how going down a steep mountain on a little plastic tub, with ineffectual brakes, bouncing from side to side with practically no control, is fun is lost on me. yes, it was awesome. finally, we grabbed a shot of our bed as we finish packing to go home. the bedroom must have been built around the bed, as there was just enough room for a thin cupboard and a bedside table and that's it. when i said earlier about having 0.5% of that chalet, this is the sort of size i mean. you'd think it would be easy to complain about the lack of space. you'd be wrong: for such a tiny flat, everything that we needed to be there was there, and we even had awesome niceties like a dishwasher. cormac and co. had an apartment for eight people, which was really spectacular too. such a shame we're home now! posted on the 2nd of february, 2014 tags: photography skiing edit cpan reviews i subscribe to the perl weekly mailing list and it's recently mentioned two absolute gems. they're reviews of modules on cpan that pertain to a particular theme. while i'm really getting into perl, it can be difficult to find the right cpan module to do a particular job. it's easy to search through the lists of debian packages that match a particular keyword, but sometimes matches don't come up and, even then, just because a module is packaged in debian doesn't mean it's the ideal one to do that job. last week it linked to a blog post that in turn linked to a review of modules to create
